SJV SUMMER NEWS

Dear Parents,
Just a few last bits of information as we move into summer . . .
--The school office will be open until the end of June, 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m each day
--The library is open on Wednesday mornings from 10-noon ALL SUMMER LONG!
--The "School Kidz" order form you received for school supplies is COMPLETELY OPTIONAL!  It looks like it would be very convenient, but I'm not sure it takes advantage of all the summer school supply sales.  Please do what is best for your family.
--Medication; if your student had medication in the office, please stop by to pick it up
--Band Camp is going wonderfully--many thanks to Mrs. Felt and all of her helpers!
--We have an updated calendar; the Diocese of Lansing has asked us to participate in a teacher Inservice on September 14, so we have added that as a "NO SCHOOL" day.
--Good News!  We are happy to welcome Mr. Bill Haley as the superintendent of Catholic Schools in Genesee County.  He will bring lots of expertise, energy, and enthusiasm with him.  This is a great step forward for all of our Catholic schools.
--Registration for next year is increasing daily!  We have welcomed several new students this week as well as registered lots of current students.  Thank you for your response to Father Tom's request.  It will make it much easier for us to plan for next year!
--I hope you are enjoying your summer!  Thanks again for all you do as parents to help our school!

SUMMER READING LISTS

SJV Students and Families:

Attached below is our summer Reading List.  Please check and see which books your student(s) will be reading over the summer!
Each book also comes with some "assignments" for students to complete over the summer.  Check the website for details for each grade.  (For instance, if your student will be in sixth grade NEXT year, check the sixth grade website for information about the books and assignments.)

These books are available at our school library, public libraries, and also at bookstores.  Our school library will be open during the summer on Wednesday mornings from 10:00 until noon.  During June, our school office will be open from 8:00 until 3:00 each day, and we can help you get the books needed, too.

Happy Reading!

Can you believe this school year is almost over?!?!?!
We hope it has been a great year for all of our St. John Vianney Families.
Please watch the website during the summer for updates on our Community Garden, Band Camp, and other SJV News.
While our students are enjoying their summer break, our teachers and staff will be busy preparing for next year.   Some news and information for next year are included below.
We hope you all have a safe and enjoyable summer!

--Mrs. Cuttitta and the Entire SJV Staff

NO HOT LUNCH THIS WEEK:  Students need to bring sack lunches on Monday and Wednesday this week.

HALF DAY OF SCHOOL on Tuesday and Thursday.  We will dismiss at noon.

DRESS CODE:  Tuesday is a Spirit Day and Wednesday is a casual day.

REPORT CARDS will come home with students on Thursday.  If students have items not turned in (such as textbooks, library books, whatever) their report cards will be held in the school office.

SCHOOL OFFICE OPEN DURING JUNE:  Our school office will be open from 8:00-3:00 until June 22.  We will check messages frequently after that.  You can always call the church office (235-1812) if you can't reach us and have a pressing concern.

COMMUNITY GARDEN:  We will finish cleaning up the rocks in our garden on Tuesday after school; please join us if you can!  We will plan to plant our garden at noon on Sunday, June 9.  Students, bring your parents and help us out!  (Also bring rakes, shovels, and hoes if you have them!)

CALENDAR:  Next year's calendar is attached, and will also replace the "old one" on the website.  Please be sure to check the calendar when planning vacations and other events.  You will notice that this is our basic calendar for the year; another calendar with all of our many events added will come out in the fall.

SCHOOL SUPPLIES:  The other item attached and placed on our website is the list of school supplies for next year.  You don't need to start shopping now--but when you see those great sales next August, you'll know right where to go to find out what your student will need.

THANK YOU for reading our newsletters so faithfully all year.  Again, watch the website for breaking news all summer long!

St. John Vianney Newsletter : Friday, May 25

What a great week it has been at St. John Vianney!  We had lots of fun activities, a concert, some field trips, a Memorial Day Flag Assembly--and even an unscheduled day off.  It was great to see everyone at so many places.  We have just as many things planned for next week!  Please read carefully, and be sure to let us know if you have any questions.

Urban Garden:  We have our plot; it is located just down the street, at 2105 Bagley Street.  Drive by and take a look!  It has been plowed and tilled by Mr. Anthony (THANK  YOU!).  Our next job is to get rid of the many rocks in it.  On Sunday (May 27) from noon until 2:00 we will gather to pick up rocks.  We are hoping lots of people come and help (remember what Grandma said;  "many hands make light work").  We hope to see you there on Sunday.  After that, our next job will be planting.  Watch this space for more information soon!  (There is also another article about the urban garden on the website, too!)

Sports Banquet is on Tuesday, May 29 at 6:00--the day we come back after the long weekend.  Cost is $6 per person.  No advance tickets or reservations are required--just come and support our teams!  Also, sports uniforms can be turned in at this time.

Powers Marching Band is asking for SJV students to march with them!  If you will be in 7th or 8th grade next year, look for the article with more information.

Holy Redeemer Field Trip Day is next Friday.  Be sure permission slips are turned in!  Also, teachers need parent drivers for their class; if you can drive, be sure to let us know.

YoYo's:  The last day to purchase Yo-yo's will be Tuesday.  Many students are getting pretty good with them--a lot of "walking the dog" has been going on at recess!

Lastly, THANK YOU to so many of  you who have sent in registrations for next year.  It makes it so much easier for us to plan.  Even though the kids are counting the days until the end of THIS year, we are already busy getting ready for NEXT year!

Have a great Memorial Day Weekend:  We had our flag ceremony today.  I think it is so important to teach our children--and remember ourselves--what a great country we live in and how much has been sacrificed to make it great.

Thank you once again for reading and keeping up with all that we do here at SJV!

--Sharon Cuttitta, Interim Principal

NEWSLETTER: Friday, May 18

To ALL Parents and Students:

--THIS NEWSLETTER IS FROM MRS. CUTTITTA: although the by-line credits Mrs. Allen, as Interim principal I will be writing the newsletter in this space and in this format until Mrs. Allen returns.  (I will not attach a separate document with additional news.)  Hopefully I will provide an update on everything you want to know -- and probably more than you want to know!  However, please remember, if you EVER have questions or concerns, be sure to contact us for an answer or a solution!  (scuttitta@sjvkids.org or 235-5687)

--MOTT PARK CLEANUP:  Mott Park has scheduled a clean-up for Saturday morning.  Since we attend school here, that makes this our area, too!  Please join in if you can!

--URBAN GARDEN:  Our plot of land has been secured and is being tilled.  We will meet on Monday, May 21 at 6:00 in the library to make further plans.  You can still help even if you can't come to the meeting; just let us know, or contact Amanda Coon at monablackwood2000@yahoo.com   See you on Monday!

--YO-YO's:  We are having a yo-yo assembly on Monday.  It is lots of fun to watch--and it's free!  However, the presenters will be sending home an order form for yo-yo's!  They are hoping that your kids will be so excited by the presentation that they will want to purchase one.  Although I remember having lots of fun with a yo-yo, I want to assure you that it is completely UP TO YOU whether you let your student talk you into buying one or not!  SJV does receive 10% of the purchase price, but please don't feel obligated in any way.

--Iowa test results for students in Grades 4, 6, and 8 will be available to be picked up in the office beginning on Monday.  If you would like them sent  home with your student, please send a note or e-mail or call and let us know.  We want to be sure that you are watching for them; some students aren't very good about taking things home!

--SPRING CONCERT IS WEDNESDAY AT 7:00!  The students have worked hard and have some great selections for us to listen to.  Grades 4-8 parents have received an e-mail from Mrs. Felt about dress code, arrival time, etc.   We are proud of our music program!

--HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND!   See you on Monday!          -- Mrs. Cuttitta
