Last week, students did a great job performing their Flint River water tests. This week, we will complete taking our data, begin planning for our Flint River Green Project to present on May 19th, and then look at the different types of igneous rocks based on where they were created.

This newsletter is a digest of all 8th Grade news stories posted for the week ending on Friday, April 21.
Article of the Week
On Monday (4/24), students will receive this week's Article of the Week. This is an informational text titled, Patriots Wide Receiver's Proudest Achievement Isn't Making the super Bowl . Students are to use the close reading strategies practiced in class. This includes reading the article three times:
(1) Skim the article using symbols as they read (5 points): (+) agree, (-) disagree, (*) important, (!) surprising, (?) wondering
(2) Number the paragraphs (10 points). Read the article carefully and make notes in the margin. They MUST have at least one note per paragraph (annotations).
(3) Perform a final quick read noting anything that was missed during the first two readings.
After students complete their three readings of the article, writing their close reading symbols, and making their annotations, they need to complete the questions following the article. Students have an example Article of the Week that we did together the second week of school. They should use this example as a guide to make sure they meet the expectations of the assignment.
The Article of the Week is DUE: Friday, April 28. Students who do not have their assignment on Friday will lose their participation points, since they will be unable to participate in the discussion or pop-up debate.
Students will continue working with their literature circle group this week. It is important that they complete their individual assignment so the group is able to have a meaningful discussion circle.
- Unit 23 book work (p. 145) is DUE: Thursday, April 27. Students received time in class to complete their unit 23 work. Many students have completed their spelling assignments through the end of the school year. These assignments have been recorded in TeacherEase.
The unit 23 test will be on Thursday, April 27.
**Please note, students have been given their list of spelling assignments and due dates through the end of the school year.
Students spent the past two weeks completing some pre-writing exercises in preparation for their memoir piece of writing. This week students will receive time in class to draft their memoir. They received a handout detailing the specifications for this piece. The draft is DUE: Tuesday, April 25.
Students will sort sentences using a flow chart to determine if they contain coordinate adjectives or not. If the sentences do contain coordinate adjectives, students will need to add commas.
