Writing
We will continue the unit on narrative poetry. Students will do the following:
- Analyze, in mentor poems, narrative structures such as line, couplet, and stanza, and experiment with the use of these structures.
- Experiment with possible poem ideas using previous notebook entries.
Work:
1. Monday: students will be asked to write a poem, using imitation while focusing on structural poetic elements. This drafted poem will be due on Wednesday.
2. Wednesday: students will be asked to write two additional poems. These will be due on Friday.
Bell Ringer Journal
Journals will be collected and graded on Monday, Oct. 8.
Grammar
This week students will learn about subject complements and objects of verbs. Below is a guideline for the week:
Tuesday (10/9): Quizzer: direct objects and indirect objects, Review fragments and run-ons, complete practice in class
Thursday (10/11): Quizzer: fragments and run-ons, complete practice test in class
Students should not have homework. The unit 1 test will be on Tuesday, Oct. 16. Students should study their practice test, all of their practice handouts, and unit 1 in their textbook, which has a lot of practice sentences.
Reminders
- The 1-page paper on the virtue of the month (diligence) is DUE: October 25. This may be handwritten or typed.
Research Paper
Last week we began discussing the requirements of the 8th grade research paper. We will continue this discussion this week. Students have received a packet of information regarding all of the requirements for this project. Please see the 8th grade home page for additional packets/information.
