Dear Parents –

We had a great St. Valentine Day party this week!  Thanks to all the parents who sent in goodies and projects and prizes for the KinderKids.    Thanks to Mrs. Taylor and Mrs. Manns for the supplies for the activities.  We actually are still eating Valentine snacks – the KinderKids love them!  Mrs. Brown, Mrs. Crowder, Mrs. Higgerson, Mr. Irwin, Mrs. Johnson, Mrs. Mack, Mrs. Riley, Mrs. Smith, and Mrs. Taylor were here to assist the children -- your helping hands are appreciated! I have some great pictures that I will put into a slide show for you and the children to see.

Mr. Jumbled Junk visited our classroom – penmanship and home activities papers are in folders.

A parent asked what I meant by the words ‘one stroke’ that I wrote on a penmanship paper that was completed by one of the children.  We encourage one continuous stoke for the vast majority of the letters that are printed.  That means, once the children put their pencil to the paper, they should not lift it until the letter is complete.  This negates the opportunity for error on the part of the children when forming letters.  On the penmanship papers, you will see arrows to guide the direction of the pencil, and numbers telling how many strokes the pencil should make.  Please use those numbers as a guide as your children practice.  Thank you!

While discussing penmanship, the KinderKids and I have talked multiple times the proper use of capital and lower case letters.  They should be using only one capital letter at the beginning of their names, and use lower case letters for the rest of their name.  Thank you for your help at home with this….

Two of our morning tasks will change next week.  The dot counting will still be addition, but I am going to switch to number cubes with higher numbers, meaning their sum will be a higher number.  The puzzle task will be switched out for KinderWriting Journals.

Next Wednesday is Ash Wednesday, the beginning of Lent.  I have several activities prepared for the children to help them understand the importance of this very holy season of our church year;  I will explain them to you in next week’s newsletter.

Of course, that means that ‘Fat Tuesday’ is this coming week, also!  We will talk about the significance of this day, and hopefully celebrate by experiencing the Polish tradition of paczki.

Continued thanks to the families of Kyndyll, Ariel, Mikayla, Zoe, Adam, Nyla, and Emily for their help with recess and lunch. smiley And thanks this week to John’s family and Henry’s family for the extra snacks that they sent in.

We do have some classroom needs;  we have only two containers of disinfecting wipes left, and we use many a day to help keep our classroom as germ-free as possible.  We are also almost out of glue sticks.  If you could send in one or the other, it would be great.  Thank you!

Our visit to the Flint Institute of Arts was again very informational and fun.  During our gallery tour this time, we saw many examples of art involving insects, which have been the theme of our art experiences with Mrs. Champion this session.  We each drew and painted an insect, being certain to include the three body parts:  head, thorax, and abdomen.  Ask your child to sing the song I taught them about the three body parts.

Vianney NightsDinner Auction (the 11th Annual!) was a wonderful event!  We had a fabulous crowd, and people were very generous to St. John Vianney Catholic School – that’s your children!!  The Lego baskets all sold for good amounts.  There was some spirited bidding when the hand-print bench and the layered painting were auctioned.  John’s family nows owns the bench (but they are letting us keep it in our classroom until the end of the year!) and the painting is now hanging in Emily’s house.  I am grateful to the Higgerson for painting and varnishing the bench, and to Mrs. Fechik for guiding the children through the painting of “All Things Bright and Beautiful.”  As a side note (actually, a ‘pride’ note!) our painting sold for the most money of all the classroom projects.  smiley   Our class composite that I framed and that the children signed was also in hot demand.  In fact, I have to have another of them printed for a family who wants copy!  It was wonderful that several of you were able to attend the auction, and that several of you were able to offer your helping hands.  smiley I am blessed with parents who realize the importance of the event to the students, and helped physically or by praying for the success of the evening.    THANK YOU!

We have had MANY children out with varying illnesses.  Lots of respiratory difficulties, vomiting, headaches, high temps, ear infections, strep, pink eye – germs have been invading the whole school!  This long weekend will be good to let everyone get healthy…….

As a point of information, Art Club is over for this school year.

Each year at this time, I share with my parents a ‘happening’ in my room from a several years ago.  As we honor two of our great presidents in George Washington and Abraham Lincoln, I am reminded of a comment made by one of my former students:  “Wow, they were very important people.”  My comment was, “you are just as important as they were.  They chose to stand up for what they knew was right, and that affected many, many people;  enough people that, hundreds of years later, the good that Presidents Washington and Lincoln did is still being talked about.  You can do exactly the same thing with your life.”   These little people need to know that they were chosen by God to be here on Earth for a purpose, and they need to seek their individual missions.  Maybe one day years from now, I will be talking to yet another class of children about one of my former KinderKids who made a huge contribution to mankind….

For now, I am thankful for the huge contribution they are each making to our awesome, inspiring, joyful Kindergarten.

See everyone on Tuesday!
