December 12 Cancellation Information

Dear Families,
Blessings of the Season to all of you!

Unfortunately, blessings of health have escaped many students and staff at SJV.  We were praying that the two weekend days would give everyone a chance to recover and come back to school today ‘germ free’; that is not the case!

Due to excessive illness and absence, we have found it necessary to cancel both Christmas programs scheduled for Monday (grades K-4) and Tuesday (grades 5-8) evenings.  Further, school will be closed for the remainder of this week for Ages & Stages, GSRP, and Kindergarten through 8th grade. The entire building will be deep cleaned so we can return next Monday, December 19th, for a healthy last two days before Christmas break.

The reported illnesses are mainly flu and RSV/respiratory in nature.  Only two cases of Covid have been reported by the 50+ students and 4-5 staff members ill on any given day.

Your student/s will be given class work today to do at home this week.  In addition, look for email from their teacher/s with further information.
 
For those who use the buses, Flint Public Schools are on intercession next week, meaning that we do not have bussing on the 19th and 20th. 

Please include in your prayers the health of  all of us here and we will do the same for you.

Peace be with each of you in our St John Vianney Family,
We are looking forward to our  Christmas concerts this coming week!  Hopefully, we will be in excellent health to enjoy the presentations.  Students are working hard to complete their parts.  We have several solos as well. 
Here are other items to note:

THESE CONCERTS HAVE BEEN CANCELLED DUE TO ILLNESS.  sad
The elementary concert is at 7:00 pm:00pm in the church Monday, December 12th.
The Middle School Concert is at 7:00 in the church on Tuesday, December 13th.
 
Ages and Stages , GSRP and Kindergarten
On Tuesday, December 20th, Ages and stages, GSRP, and Kindergarten will dismiss at 11:30.
The rest of the school will eat lunch at school and attend the trip to Rollhaven. Dismissal will be at the usual time of school.  Please let your child's teacher know if you plan to pick them up at Rollhaven. It will be the last day of school before the break.
 
School Cancellations
There have been many illnesses in the past week among students and staff.  We may cancel school in the coming week to give time to the maintenance personnel to do extra disinfecting. The illnesses reported seem to come and go for both staff and students,  Although we are not the only place students and staff travel, we want to be proactive.    December and March are usually the worst months for the flu, hence the obvious uptick in illness incidents.

FLU AND yOU
Some questions answered by the CDC are as follows:
How long are you contagious with the flu?
People with flu are most contagious in the first three to four days after their illness begins. However, infants and people with weakened immune systems who are infected with flu viruses may be contagious for longer than seven days.
Most symptoms go away in 4 to 7 days. The cough and tired feeling may last for weeks. Sometimes, the fever comes back. Some people may not feel like eating.
What are the worst flu days?
On day zero, you probably won't know that you have the flu, but you ARE contagious at this time. ...
  • On day one, you will start feeling sick! ...
  • The worst days of the flu are over. ...
  • On day 5, you should start to see the end of this illness.
 The school committee agrees that we should have a team regularly interceding for our needs in the school.  If you would like to participate, please send me an email stating your interest.
