St. John Vianney Catholic School PreK-8th

We currently serve 180 students from pre-kindergarten to 8th grade, many of whom go on to attend private high schools and earn college scholarships. (Excerpt from the Nov. 2024 issue of Faith Magazine) As the Saint John Vianney team brainstormed potential interventions for its students, the idea of integrating a service dog arose repeatedly.

“I’d been considering getting a service dog because my asthma was really bad,” Marshall recounts. “Then Murphy came along, and he’s been wonderful.”

A standard poodle, Murphy underwent specialized training and joined the school community during the summer of 2020. Since then, he has become a beloved presence at Saint John Vianney.

“He is very sensitive to people,” Marshall notes. “He’ll approach someone, licking them when he senses they need comfort. For instance, while observing playtime in childcare, Murphy immediately went to a particularly withdrawn boy, licking him and laying against him. I approached him and asked what was going on; he replied, ‘Yeah, but I think it’s going to be OK.’ All the while, he was petting Murphy’s head.”

The one challenge Murphy presents? Keeping track of him throughout the school day.

“Some teachers have a doggy bed in their classrooms, allowing students to earn time with him as a reward,” Marshall explains. “I often lose track of where he is during the day and have to page staff to bring him back to my office.”

What our Parents are saying

What our Parents are saying 〰️

St. John Vianney is a warm, generous, inclusive community that strives to give voice, opportunity, and an immersive Catholic education to the young people of Flint, Michigan. It has become both a spiritual and educational home for our children and is one of the reasons we’re so grateful to live in Flint!

We are thankful for St. John Vianney Catholic School, which we initially chose because we knew our children would be loved and nurtured. We have continued our support because the school has provided our children with exceptional opportunities to grow in their faith and core academics, as well as engaging experiences in STEM, music, and art. St. John Vianney Catholic School has been truly enriching for our family.

St. John Vianney isn’t a place: it is a community.

I love having Blessing at SJV because the school provides what I like to call a whole person education experience which I believe should include not only academic achievement but character and spiritual development as well. I love the fact that SJV incorporates all these elements in its educational services.
