Throughout the year, students will read several novels that reinforce various reading comprehension skills. These include: story elements (plot, setting, and characters), predicting, context clues, story sequence, and vocabulary.
We will also be working in MAISA Units and will be covering the following concepts:
1. Readers Read with Power
2. Interpreting Characters
3. Informational Reading
4. Interpretive and Analytic Reading
5. Historical Fiction
6. Informational Reading Research
Book Club/ On Deck Reading
Each student will be reading a book club and on deck book at any given time. They have a reading bag that contains each of these books, along with a folder. In the folder, you will find two calendars- one for each book. These calendars tell you exactly what pages your child will be reading each day. They are required to stay up to date on their assigned pages and journals/questions packets. Each book has a different work component. In some books, they will be keeping a journal. and in others, they will be given question packets. I will do "book checks" to make sure they are up to date on their reading.
Test Forms
As the year progresses, you will see test forms coming home in your child's Friday folder. These are a quiz they do in class (typically once a day) and they test their comprehension, vocabulary usage, and grammar. They get to chose from a variety of forms with categories from "Sports and Games" to "Arts and Entertainment" and everything in between. Each form gives them a short reading which they use to answer the questions. Students will use the answer keys to grade their test form and if they get 6 or more wrong, they can redo it.
